Red-Haired Shanks

Red-Haired Shanks (赤髪のシャンクス, Akagami no Shankusu?) is a fictional character in the One Piece manga and anime.

About Shanks
Red-Haired Shanks is a legendary and powerful pirate in the Grand Line, being the captain of the Red Haired Pirate Crew and one of the Four Emperors in the second half of the grand line. Furthermore, he is Monkey D. Luffy's childhood hero and a former member of Gol D. Roger's Crew. Overall, he is greatly respected by most of the characters, despite having a 'soft' and friendly nature and never appearing in actual combat until he started a fight with Whitebeard[1]. As a whole, he does not make many appearances in the series, although he appears in a majority of the opening or closing themes of the anime.

Shanks always wears a long black cape over his shoulders and until he met Luffy, wore a straw hat that he had worn for many years beforehand. He always wears trousers that are cut below the knee as well as a pair of sandals. The most striking thing about Shanks is the colour of his red hair, of which his nick-name 'Red Haired Shanks' comes from. He also has three scars across his left eye, which were given to him by Blackbeard a long time ago [2]. He has a missing left arm, that he had lost when trying to save Luffy from a Sea King. Shanks and his crew are almost always seen partying and drinking alcoholic beverages whenever they make an appearance as the Captain's favourite pastimes are attending and hosting parties and banquets.

According to Oda, Shanks is the one character that resembles himself the most out of all the One Piece characters, because of his fun-loving partying nature.

He also speaks with a cockney accent in the English anime dub.

In a more recent Japanese fan poll, he was ranked the eleventh most popular character. As well, he will be appearing in Jump Ultimate Stars, although he is only confirmed to be a Help character.

Red-Haired Shanks

Personality and Relationships
Shanks is one of the most laid back characters in the world of One Piece, preferring to take his time as he and his crew travels around the world rather than rushing from one place to another. He also enjoys parties and having fun but at the same time is also serious when he has to be. Shanks isn't cruel like many other pirate captains nor does he rule over his crew with fear to gain respect. His friendly nature means he won't purposely seek to harm others, and he is able to make serious characters like Mihawk join in with his fun.

Shanks doesn't seem to mind what happens to himself. He'll take others throwing food and drink or spitting on him without even fighting back, laughing with his crew at his own misfortunes. Even losing an arm did not bother him much. Shanks however will drop this at someone who puts his friends in danger. He also has a side of him that panics when things go wrong.

Luffy looks up to Shanks as his role model, childhood hero and the man he wants to eventually surpass. At first, Shanks never took Luffy seriously as he was just a boy so mocked his dreams to become a pirate. Later after Luffy stood up to the bandits and then as they were leaving declared he would be better than him, Shanks begins to treat him seriously. In the manga Ben Beckman tells Shanks that Luffy is going to be big. Shanks confirms this by saying that Luffy reminds him of himself when he was Luffy's age. Just as Luffy is currently looking for Shanks, Shanks eagerly awaits the day he meets up with Luffy.

It is said that Shanks' sword fighting skills were once a match for the world's strongest swordsman, Mihawk. It also is said that the two men would often spar with each other. When Shanks lost his left arm which was also his good arm, Mihawk stopped seeking him out for duels. However, it seems he and Mihawk remain on neutral terms with each other.

So far, outside of the World Government, the only one who appears to oppose Shanks is Buggy the clown. Ironically, in their youth Buggy accused Shanks of being too naive and innocent to ever make it as a pirate and yet presently Shanks is a great pirate while Buggy and his crew are still quite weak in comparison.

Red-Haired Shanks and Buggy as Pirate TRainee

History
Shanks the Trainee Pirate

While Shanks was introduced during Chapter 1 of the manga and episode 4 of the anime, his story actually begins much earlier. His hometown was in West Blue, and sometime in his youth, he was a pirate in training aboard Gold Roger's ship alongside another would-be pirate, Buggy the Clown. The two spent most of their time together arguing over meaningless things, such as which pole was colder, the North or the South. Their constant bickering was met with annoyance by the rest of the crew. [4]

* Note: In one of the SBS sections of One Piece, in reference to Shanks and Buggy's 'which is colder' question, a fan asked Oda who got it right. He went onto explain the Arctic was just a mass of ice and that the Antarctic was a continent, made of land. Since land is colder then the sea (and the Arctic is frozen sea whereas the Antarctic is frozen land), Shanks was correct and the South Pole is colder, however it is not the coldest place in the world.

Sadly, the two young men would forever remain at odds with one another, thanks to a particularly unfortunate accident on Shanks' part.

It occurred after a raid on a passing ship where Buggy acquired a map which told the location of an underwater treasure. Once he realized his dreams of becoming the captain of a powerful crew would be all too possible with such a treasure, he chose to conceal the map and keep it for himself. Later that night, he had a conversation with Shanks who told him of a Devil Fruit (a cursed fruit of the ocean which was told to steal the ability to swim from the person that ate it, but grant them a special power) that had been found in the earlier raid. Shanks also told him of the Fruit's value, an amount great enough to set Buggy's dream in motion.

The next day, Buggy switched the Devil Fruit with a fake he had acquired from the kitchens and, with the entire crew as his audience, devoured the imposter fruit, successfully deceiving his crewmates into believing he had eaten the devil fruit. Afterwards, Buggy retreated to a lifeboat with map and Devil Fruit in hand, ready to leave his apprenticehood and become a true pirate. However, his plans were thwarted when Shanks discovered him and, in an attempt to hide the stolen fruit, Buggy stuffed it into his mouth. A quick reproach about stealing from the kitchens and Shanks made to leave, but a moment later turned and hailed his crewmate once more, surprising Buggy into swallowing the precious fruit and dropping his treasure map into the ocean below.

Buggy, desperate to retrieve his only means of gaining his own pirate ship, jumped in after the map, only to discover that the rumours of the Devil Fruit were true and he was unable to swim. He was soon rescued by Shanks, but from that day forward blamed the other man for hindering his dreams.

They were both present during Gold Roger's execution. Shanks asked if Buggy want to join his crew, and naturally Buggy refused. It was then that the two separated and have not see each other since.

* Note: The age of Shanks at the time of Roger's death was 15 years.

Captain Shanks and the boy Luffy

The memory of what became of Buggy never left Shanks' mind, and he was soon faced with a similar problem some years later when, after becoming the captain of his own pirate ship, he arrived on an island where he met a strange young boy named Monkey D. Luffy. Intrigued by the boy and enjoying the atmosphere of Luffy's village, he decided to make the island his crew's base for a short period of time. [7]

Luffy quickly grew attached to the crew, so much so that he wished to join their ranks and become a pirate as well. Shanks refused to allow the boy into his crew on the basis that he was too young and was still unable to swim (it was because of this attribute that Shanks and his crew had affectionately given Luffy the nickname 'Anchor.') Instead of snuffing his vigor, Shanks' rejection led Luffy to prove his manhood and stab himself in the cheek with a knife, scarring him permanently. This scene was exempt from the anime in fear of children mimicking Luffy's actions.

Shanks remained unimpressed, and stood firm under his decision. Sometime later, while Shanks, his crew, and Luffy were relaxing and (on the part of the crew) drinking heavily in the town bar, a group of mountain bandits arrived. Their leader, ignoring the pirates and seeing them as no apparent danger, walked up to the counter to ask for sake, only to be told the pirates had finished off the last of the bar's supply. Shanks apologized to the bandit leader and offered him the last unopened bottle, but instead of accepting the liquor, the man smashed the bottle with his fist, spraying Shanks, the counter, and floor of the bar. Despite this abuse, Shanks didn't appear to be angry, instead moving to help the bartender clean up the mess. The bandit leader, incensed, drew his sword and broke the rest of the dishes, including Shanks' meal, then left the pirate captain to his cleaning.

Once the group left the bar, Shanks cracked a smile and laughed along with his crew at his own misfortune. Luffy, who detested the sight of his hero acting weak, yelled that if you didn't fight back and protect yourself, you were not a real man. Shanks, being the cool, calm person he is, explained that spilled sake was nothing to get angry over.

Luffy, still displeased, turned away from Shanks and in doing so spotted a small chest containing a strange fruit. Always a heavy eater, Luffy ate the fruit and found out a few moments later from Shanks the fruit was a Devil Fruit and he would never be able to swim.

Red-Haired Shanks Saved Luffy and Lost his Left Arm

* In the manga, it seems as though Luffy found the fruit before the encounter with the bandit leader, since he was already eating it when the leader walked up to the bar counter.

Yet again, someone close to Shanks had eaten a Devil Fruit. Yet, unlike Buggy, Luffy did not blame Shanks for the mishap.

Sometime later, while Shanks and his crew were away from the town, Luffy argued with the group of bandits from the bar and demanded they apologize to the Red-Haired pirate. Laughing at such a small child's actions, the bandits hauled Luffy from the bar and began beating him, though they were soon stopped by the sudden appearance of Shanks and his large group of pirates.

Shanks was much different in this confrontation, as a friend was something he considered worth fighting over. After a quick fight (ending with one of the bandits dead and the others, excluding the leader, out cold), the lead bandit set off a smoke bomb and made off with Luffy toward the sea, believing pirates would never search for a bandit out at sea. Luffy continued to berate him, and finally getting tired of listening to him, the bandit tossed the boy into the water to drown. Moments later, a giant Sea King appeared and devoured the bandit, then turned his attention to Luffy. Thankfully, Shanks saved the boy from a grisly death, but in the process lost his left arm.

It was this scene of such intense bravery and the will to go to great lengths to save those he cared for that set Luffy's life on its current course.

A short while later, Shanks decided to leave the village. During their departure, while he and his crew were bidding the town farewell, Luffy swore that he would become better than the Red-Haired Pirates - he would become the Pirate King. Pleased with such a statement , Shanks decided to give Luffy his precious straw hat, instructing the boy to return it to him once he had become a great pirate. This straw hat would later become the trademark of Luffy's crew, the Straw Hat Pirates.

Pirate Red-Haired Shanks and his Crew

Shanks present storyline

After leaving Luffy's home town, we next see Shanks and his crew 10 years later after the main storyline begins. They are seen relaxing on an island after drinking heavily. Then much to the terror of a few of Shanks' weaker crew members, Mihawk pays Shanks a visit, bringing news that delights the red-haired pirate; Luffy has come at last.

* Note: In the 4Kids version this scene suffered heavy cuts. Shanks still asks Mihawk to stay, but much of this scene was removed because of the alcoholic references, including references to him throwing a party to celebrate Luffy's coming. Thus Shanks' fun-living nature was lost and instead it depicted him with an evil tone. Also, the scene was cut from its original episode and added at the end of a much earlier episode. In the process many other scenes from the original episode were also cut from the 4Kids version and never shown, such as the scene showing Kaya and Luffy's hometown.

Currently, Shanks and his crew are sailing the Grand Line, but while they are aware of Luffy's rise to fame, they have not yet encountered the younger pirate or his crew. Shanks also for some reason has an interest in Portgas D. Ace and Blackbeard, and has sent a messenger to deliver a note to Whitebeard concerning this matter. Shanks is now on his way to visit Whitebeard in person.

Although Shanks spent quite some time in Luffy and Ace's hometown, there is no evidence of any relationship between Shanks and Ace yet. However, Shanks does know Ace's captain, Whitebeard, so they could know each other.

The World Government fears that Whitebeard and he are forming an alliance with each other, though whether or not they will try to prevent Shanks meeting Whitebeard is another question yet to be answered. Shanks has already declared that he is prepared to defend himself and his crew if they get in his way. The World Government may be just observing his actions for now, but they have considered drastic measures such as elimination if he causes trouble. [10]

In very recent chapters Shanks' powers and position was revealed even further. As being one of the Yonkou, the Four Emperors in the second part of Grand Line (known as the New World), he has earned himself a famous reputation. Robin knows who he is and is surprised that Luffy knew him personally, but Nami confirms that Luffy is actually taking care of the straw-hat on behalf of him.[11]

While Luffy is still in Water 7, Shanks and Whitebeard have broken through the blockade that the World Government has set for them and have finally come into contact, placing the Navy on the highest alert.

Recent chapters revealed that the scar over his eye was made by a former member of Whitebeard's crew: Blackbeard. Shanks talks about how Blackbeard has been hiding in the shadow of Whitebeard, waiting for an opportunity and getting stronger. Shanks warns Whitebeard to call Ace back, but when Whitebeard refuses a fight breaks out between the two. The clouds then split, causing someone to believe that the heavens themselves have split.

Abilities and Powers

Little is known about what Shanks is able to do, but he appears to be an extremely formidable pirate. When he saved Luffy from the Sea King, the beast locked eyes with him for a moment and froze, transfixed in fright, before swimming away. It is said that Shanks' sword fighting skills were once a match for the world's strongest swordsman, Mihawk. It also is said that the two men would often spar with each other. When Shanks lost his left arm which was also his good arm, Mihawk stopped seeking him out for duels.

What is known is that as a member of the 4 Emperor Pirates in the second half of the Grand Line, his power is equal to that of Whitebeard. When Shanks and Whitebeard clash, Shanks wields his sword with his one remaining arm and is strong enough to stop Whitebeard's massive polearm. Their weapons clashing literally split the clouds in the sky.

Also it seems that Shanks is so incredibly powerful that the lower ranks of Whitebeard's crew were rendered unconscious by his spirit just being in his presence .

Red Haired Pirate

Red Haired Pirate Flag

Red Haired Pirate Ship

Not much is currently known about them, though some of the crew are very famous. What is also known about them is that their Captain Shanks appears to know Mihawk and he seems to be on friendly (or at least neutral) terms with Mihawk. Shanks used to be a trainee on Gol. D Roger's crew with Buggy the Clown, and Buggy forever hates him for botching one of his treasure hunts by "making" him eat a Devil Fruit (though it was really entirely his own fault).

While they appear in only small scenes normally at the end of arcs, they seem to be an ongoing background plot throughout the entire story. They are a very laid back band of pirates who are almost always seen partying and drinking alcoholic beverages whenever they make an appearance. They seem much more friendlier compared to other pirate bands seen in the series, they hung around Luffy's hometown for a roughly a year without complaints from the local villagers.

The Red Hairs are the first pirate crew to appear in the series and are the main influences of both Luffy and Usopp's journey. Ten years before the present timeline, they spent a year in his town and became very good friends with Luffy, which led to him wanting to be part of their crew, but Shanks told him that he was too weak, which angered him. Shanks was also the one who, unintentionally, supplied Luffy with his Devil Fruit. When a group of mountain bandits hassled the crew in a bar, they didn't fight back, but once they left, they immediately burst out laughing. Luffy was angry at them for not fighting back, not realizing there was no need to.

Later after the bandits showed up again when the crew were away, Luffy overheard them saying bad things about Shanks and his crew so Luffy stepped in and tried to defend his friends. The bandits easily subdued him, and the Red Hairs finally struck in order to save his life, easily defeating them. However, the leader, Higuma the Bear, had escaped out to sea in order to kill Luffy, only to be eaten by a Sea King and as Luffy, who could no longer swim due to his Devil Fruit, sank into the water, Shanks pulled him up. Though the captain's left arm was bitten off by the Sea King, he showed no sign of pain and scared the monster away by simply staring at it. Later, when the crew finally decided to leave, Luffy decided he would become a pirate on his own, with his own crew. He declared his intentions to become an even greater pirate than Shanks and to become the Pirate King, so an amused Shanks gave his signature straw hat to Luffy, which he said to give back to him once he surpassed him. [1]

Usopp's connection to the Red Hairs is through his father, Yasopp. When Usopp was young, Yasopp left his family in order to go out to sea, as urged by his wife. Due to how he was raised, Usopp understood that his father left to pursue his dream and harbors no ill will against him--in fact, he wants to become a great sniper and man of the sea like him.[2]

They make their first appearance in the present timeline after Luffy gets his first bounty and celebrate Luffy's arrival in the world of piracy. Later on, they contact Whitebeard for unknown reasons, though it seems to somehow relate to Portgas D. Ace and Blackbeard. The World Government fears that the two crews may end up joining together, but have decided to simply observe their actions for now. Recently, it has been revealed that the Redhairs have broken through a government blockade and have reached Whitebeard, finally allowing for two of the pirate crews of the Four Emperors to meet.

Red Haired Pirate Crew strength

The strength of the crew as a whole is unknown. But Rockstar, a recent addition to Shanks' crew, has a bounty of 94,000,000 and is still considered to be a rookie. While it is yet to determine if many of Shanks' other crew members have bounties, if Rockstar's bounty is any indication to go by, their crew is indeed very strong.

The first hint at their crews strength came early on in the story from Luffy's past. The bandit leader Higuma the bear tried to threaten Shanks with his 8,000,000 beli bounty but Shanks was not afraid of the man and even took having a bottle of sake and his plate of food being smashed and split over him. Then later on Ben Beckman took on the bandit's men and wiped them all out with ease telling Higuma afterwards that if he wanted to take them on they should bring a warship as a back-up. Moments later Shanks did something shocking while rescuing Luffy from the sea - he scared away a Sea King just by staring at it.

When Mihawk, one of the Shichibukai, brought news of Luffy's rise to fame, the younger, weaker members of his crew appear terrified of the great Swordsman and approached him with caution. However, the senior members (including Shanks, Ben Beckman, Yasopp and Lucky Roux) appeared not bothered at all by his visit. This is possibly because of their captain's friendly relations with him, but also likely that this is because they are around his league also. [6]

Shanks does not fear Whitebeard, the world's strongest rated pirate whereas some pirate Captains quiver at the mere mention of his name. Rockstar also used his captain's name to plea to Whitebeard the importance of a letter he delivered to him as well as wanting to challenge Whitebeard's men for insulting his honor.[7]

The final clue to the crew's strength is that the World Government greatly fears what would happen if his and Whitebeard's crew joined up.

Recently, it has been revealed Shanks is one of the Four Emperors of the second half of the Grand Line, along with Whitebeard. This makes the Red Haired pirate Crew one of the four strongest pirate groups in the Grand Line. [8] They were also able to come in contact with Whitebeard, by going through a naval blockade the Navy had set up, under the order of the Five Elder Stars. Furthermore, he is still able to fight one-on-one against Whitebeard, despite the loss of his good arm; their current battle appears to have managed to split the clouds apart.

Rockstar

Rockstar
Miscellaneous Crew
(94,000,000 beli bounty)

Red-Haired Shanks pirate crew. Shanks sent him to deliver a message to Whitebeard, which the pirate captain promptly ripped up, going along with Shanks' prediction anyway. Even so, Rockstar wanted to fight Whitebeard to reclaim his honor, but Shanks told him it was no big deal and to pull back.

Rockstar has only appeared in one anime episode so far. Even though little is known about him, it can be assumed he is quite powerful since his bounty is so high. Together with the info that he is a new member it could mean that many of Shanks' nameless members could also have high bounties, maybe a little hint about how great Shanks' power could be.

Rockstar's character and personality is possibly a joke referring to old rockstars who frequently try to see if people remember them. When he arrives on Whitebeard's ship, he asks some of Whitebeard's crew if anyone remembered him from his solo days. Despite his high bounty, everyone he asked replied with a surprising (or unsurprising) "no."

Yasopp
Sniper

Yasopp (ヤソップ, Yasoppu) is a gifted sharp-shooter capable of shooting the legs off an ant at 100 feet without harming the rest of it. He is the father of Usopp and was one of Luffy's favorite members of the Red-Haired pirates. It is unknown whether he knows that his son has recently become a pirate. Before, His name is written on his headband, while currently he doesn't have his headband anymore, but spawned dreads and tattoed his name on his right arm.

Lucky Roux
Lieutenant
Red-Haired Shanks pirate crew, he is always seen eating a rack of meat. Lucky is also the first person to actually kill someone in One Piece and sets the stage for the series; a pirate's life is a dangerous one.

* Note: In the English dub he does not kill the bandit, instead claiming that cap gun was used.

Incidentally, a roux is a sauce or soup base used in French and Creole dishes. Although his name can be either "Lucky Roux" or "Lucky Roo," his name is most commonly romanized as "Lucky Roux." He is called "Lucky Roux" in the English One Piece Collectible Card game as well.

Ben Beckman

Ben Beckman 10 Years Ago

First Mate
Ben Beckman (ベン・ベックマン, Ben Bekkuman) is the first mate in Red-Haired Shanks' pirate crew, he possesses astonishing wisdom and strength, and acts as advisor to his captain. When first seen in the manga and anime, he wears his black hair in a ponytail, and is never seen without his rifle nearby or a cigarette in his mouth. Later on in the series, his hair has turned grey and is cut short, and he has a large X-shaped scar on his left temple. These changes might be due to either some of the bigger battles he had or due to early aging. He appears to be a lot less fun-loving than the other members of the crew but a lot more relaxed, acting as the level headed member, similar to Zoro. It appears he is quite strong, wiping out a large group of Higuma the Bear's mates rather quickly.

Tony Tony Chopper

Tony Tony Chopper (トニートニー・チョッパー, Tonī Tonī Choppā?) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series One Piece.

About Chopper

He is the Straw Hat crew's general physician, despite being a reindeer; due to a set of unusual circumstances, he ate the Hito Hito no Mi (ヒトヒトの実, Human Human Fruit), which permitted him the ability to speak, think, and (to a limited extent) change into a human. One of the most innocent Straw Hat Pirates, Chopper is also very naïve, resulting in a tendency to believe anything told to him, even the outrageously fictitious, exaggerated lies of Usopp.

Chopper's left antler has a metal plate wrapped around it at all times. He originally broke it while retrieving the mushroom for Doctor Hiruluk. It is unknown how his left antler manages to transform during his transformations; given that they disappear completely during his human form, one can assume the devil fruit's power is capable of doing this. Chopper's reindeer appearance often comes in handy. Enemies will usually assume he is just a pet when they haven't actually interacted with him. This was especially useful in Alabasta, when he played an instrumental role in Sanji breaking the others out of Rain Dinners.

The name "Tony Tony Chopper" is partly a play on "Tonakai" ("Reindeer"), and partly on the idea that his horns look like they could chop down trees.

In Japanese Fan Polls, Chopper is constantly the fourth most popular character. He's in fifth place in the 4Kids poll.

Chopper is obviously based on Rudolf as it was originally his different colored nose that got him abandoned from his parents and alienated him from his herd before he ate the Devil Fruit. His birthday apparently supports this fact.

Oda has stated that he uses the color pink to represent Chopper, and (Oda was answering the questions as Chopper) for his smell, "how am I supposed to know?".

Personality and Relationships

Chopper is a bit naive and is missing a bit of toughness and often acts like a child, but an upright friend and companion who will try anything to overcome a task given by his team. He also still is in distrusts humankind because of his youth and will often outright insult a human who compliments him while smiling, dancing, and being obviously pleased. Chopper also shows a certain interest in books, but mostly medicine related ones.

Chopper is more or less on a journey to define himself, seeing almost anybody on his crew as a role model. This, combined with his naivete, often causes him to imitate the other Straw Hats' actions, no matter how obviously silly. Because of this, he often gets involved in the crazy antics of Luffy and Usopp, wholeheartedly believing that what they are doing is sensible and fun. Chopper is also a thankful listener to Usopp's lies, most of which he really believes, at least for a short time after he hears them. Robin calls him "Doctor-San" which makes him dance in joy. Sanji originally wanted to cook Chopper and continues to refer to him as "the emergency food supply" to tease him but considers him a friend. Chopper originally wasn't hired to be the ship's doctor by Luffy, but just for being a "cool reindeer that can transform".

When Chopper recognizes someone needs medical attention he often will start to run around screaming for a doctor, just to realize that he is one. Another one of Chopper's habits is his reverse cartoon peek where he's standing behind a wall or doorway and peeks at people, trying not to be seen by them. Unfortunately he's not hiding his body behind the wall, as a result his body is visible and only one half of his face is hidden. A running gag is that various though random characters in One Piece. Most characters think Chopper is a Tanuki whilst in his Brain Point form. His Heavy Point form likewise is mistaken for a gorilla or a abominable snowman.

In any case, due to the fact he is commonly in his brain point or walk point, he is often treated as the Straw hat pirate's pet. This attribute to the fact that he only got 50 belli for his bounty.

Most people call him Chopper, however Nefertari Vivi calls him "Tony-kun", and Nico Robin refers to him as "Doctor-san" (Mr. Doctor).

Chopper's dream is to cure all disease.

Chopper was originally a reindeer with the slight oddity of a blue nose, which caused other reindeer to treat him as an outcast (always making him follow the herd from far back). However, when the young reindeer ate the Hito Hito no Mi, he was even more ostracized from his herd (and with the increase in intelligence granted by the fruit, now acutely aware of it) and struck out on his own. Unfortunately for Chopper, his attempts at communicating with the humans on Drum Island proved disastrous, and he was shot by villagers who mistook him for The Abominable Snowman. Luckily, though, he was rescued by the quack Dr. Hiriluk (Hiruluk in the Japanese version), who named him and took him in as his friend and 'assistant.' Although his deeds were of dubious medical value, Dr. Hiriluk became Chopper's role-model. Hiriluk taught Chopper his philosophy on life (that all diseases could be cured) and his strong faith in the Jolly Roger as a symbol of strength against all odds. The two went from house to house, administering their "cures" in a country where all doctors not sanctioned by King Wapol were banned.

When Hiriluk's health took a turn for the worse, however, Chopper found himself left out in the cold once again as the old man didn't want Chopper to watch him die. But once Chopper found out what was going on, he was determined that he would find something to cure his mentor and only friend. He soon found what he was looking for: a special kind of mushroom with a skull-and-crossbones prominently displayed in the medical book, unaware of what that sign really meant due to Hiriluk's praising of pirates. Remembering what he overheard by some villagers that certain special type of mushroom can heal every illness, Chopper steals Hiriluk's favorite medical book to find the miracle mushroom. Chopper's arduous journey was a success, although he risked his life and suffered many injuries, such as a broken left horn.

Hiriluk overwhelmed with tears of gratitude, ate the mushroom to show his love and appreciation to Chopper, but Chopper would later find out from Dr. Kureha that he had given Dr. Hiriluk a fatal dose of poison. But Hiriluk was not to live much longer, anyway. Declaring that he had had a wonderful life, he committed suicide by blowing himself up outside of Drum Castle (before being killed by the poison, for Chopper's sake), where he wanted to heal the sick before he died. As per Hiriluk's last wish, Dr. Kureha (the last remaining doctor not owned by King Wapol) took Chopper in and taught him 'real' medicine for the next 6 years. Chopper worked as hard as he could, in order to become a doctor like his idol, Hiruluk.

Arrival of the Straw Hats

However, Chopper's isolated life in Drum Castle (which he and Dr. Kureha annexed after the King Wapol fled) would one day come to an end with the arrival of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew. Chopper, naturally distrustful of humans, was not pleased, especially given Luffy and Sanji's desire to cook and eat him. But when Chopper showed both his medical powers and his skills in battle against the returned forces of King Wapol, Luffy offered (forced) him the (as-yet unfilled) position of Ship's Doctor in his crew. While Chopper was at first unwilling to leave, he remembered Dr. Hiruluk wishing Chopper to sail around and seeing the world on his own and with his desire to broaden his medical horizons, he decides to join Luffy and his crew. Fleeing the castle with the Straw Hat Pirates, Chopper was given a send-off of gigantic proportions: Kureha had turned the snow into Sakura blossoms, and the cliff where the castle stood became the sakura tree the very same that Hiruluk had researched over 30 years that would one day, cure the people of Drum of their "sickness of the heart", passed to Dr. Kureha as one of his last request before death. Overcome with tears, Chopper made a fond farewell to his birthplace and mentors, setting out to sea for the first time in his life.

Life As a Straw Hat pirate

Chopper was originally abandoned by his family for being different, and being with humans was the same. Chopper's first friends (other than the people who raised him) were the Straw Hats, which opened him up to the world.

Aboard the Going Merry, Chopper was quickly thrust into battle against the forces of Baroque Works, on the island of Alabasta. While unused to the heat, Chopper was instrumental in getting the assistance of the island's animals and defeating the Mr. 4 / Miss Merry Christmas team.

As time would go on, Chopper would form an especially strong bond with the ship's Marksman and Liar, Usopp. The naïve reindeer would often get taken in by Usopp's fibs, believing him completely. But despite this oddity, the two came to be a sort of "team", supplementing each other's skills in battle and generally becoming the best of friends. On his own, Chopper became a vital aspect of the crew, treating their injuries and keeping their spirits up with his constant amazement at the variety and wonder of the world.

As of late, Chopper has become somewhat conflicted in his role. While he continues to be faithful to his crew and dispense valuable medical assistance, he was badly shaken when Usopp (arguably his closest friend in the group) chose to leave. Panicked and saddened by this development, it was all Chopper could do to leave behind some medical supplies to treat his former crewmate's wounds, while he followed his captain into the Venetian-styled city of Water Seven. He was instrumental in saving both Iceburg and Paulie from the destruction of Galley-La Company's headquarters, and afterward expressed his determination to help retrieve Robin from the clutches of the World Government organization CP9. While Sanji succeeded in retrieving both Usopp and Franky the ship dismantler, Usopp is currently in the guise of Sogeking (a sharpshooting hero of Usopp's own invention, from the Island of Snipers). Despite the others immediately seeing through "Sogeking", Chopper and Luffy do not recognize Sogeking as actually being Usopp (with Chopper even asking for his autograph). Usopp does not seem to want Chopper to know the truth yet, and guards his disguise carefully.

Recent Chapters

Currently, Chopper received his first bounty of 50 Belly, and the only reason he got it is due to the fact that he is a "pet" of Straw Hats. This possibly gave him the smallest active bounty of all time. Chopper is shocked that his bounty is so small, since he believed he fought like a man.

Abilities and powers

Basic Transformations

As previously mentioned, Chopper ate the "Human-Human Fruit". This is a "Zoan"-type fruit which gives the one who eats it three base transformations:

* Walk Point (脚力強化 (ウォークポイント)): This is Chopper's form as a normal reindeer, useful for general travel on foot. Called "Sprint Boost" in the English dub.

* Brain Point (頭脳強化 (ブレーンポイント)): Chopper's usual look, with a small body and large head. He is smarter in this form, and also inexplicably cute. In addition he can scope out an enemies weakness in this form while he is under the influence of a Rumble Ball. In the English dub it is named "Brain Boost". This is also the form where he does his best thinking because he can utilize both human intelligence and reindeer sensitivity at the same time.
o Scope (診断(スコープ)) / Rumble Scope: Can only be used when in Brain Point form and after eating a "Rumble Ball", a move in which he concentrates and scans his opponent to find their weakness. When this move was first shown to Luffy, Luffy assumed that Chopper would fire a laser. The reasoning behind this assumption is because the way Chopper holds his hooves up to perform this move visually looks like a Dragon Ball move, the Kikōhō technique most likely in question.

* Heavy Point (重量強化 (ヘビーポイント)): Chopper's "human" form, which gives him a werehuman-like appearance and height. He uses this form to help steer the ship. Called "Heavy Boost" in the English dub. This form imbues Chopper with super-human strength. While his voice stays the same in all forms, his voice becomes deeper in this point in the English Dub.

Rumble Ball Transformations

Additionally, Chopper has added on to these by use of the "Rumble Ball", which gives its user several more transformations for a three minutes by 'distorting the wavelengths of transformation'

* Jumping Point (飛力強化 (ジャンピングポイント)): Chopper keeps his reindeer legs in a human-like form, which allows him to jump long distances. "Jumping Boost" in the English.

* Arm Point (腕力強化 (アームポイント)): Chopper's second most powerful form, his fore-hooves become extremely muscular in his humanesque form, powerful enough to inflict a great amount of damage. In the English version, this is called his "Arm Boost"

* Horn Point (角強化 (ホーンポイント)): Similar to Walk Point, but Chopper's forelegs get bulkier and his horns get larger and sharp. In the English version it is called "Horn Boost". Tony said that it was his strongest point(besides monster)

* Guard Point (毛皮強化 (ガードポイント)): Chopper's fur grows out and becomes an impenetrable shield against outside attacks. He looks like an overgrown Chia Pet in this form. In the English version it is named "Guard Boost".

It's likely that Chopper will discover other forms that he can change into. It has recently been revealed Chopper can't eat multiple Rumble Balls back to back within 6 hours or otherwise he'll lose control of his transformations.

* Monster: It seems that the consumption of three Rumble Balls in under six hours created a new Point in which he is standing similar to Heavy Point, but possesses an oddly misshapen head and antlers, as well as an incredible (likely more than twenty feet, or about the size of an office building) increase in height and strength. Chopper's fur is also lengthened in this form. Chopper also loses all consciousness and goes completely berserk in this form. Also, this form appears to be a combination of all Chopper's points, not including Brain Point and Arm Point (Heavy Point stance, Walk Point speed, Horn Point horns, Jump Point legs, and Guard Point hair). Doctor Kureha told him after he had used it for the first time, that he had leveled an entire village on Drum Island while in this form. Kureha also commented on this form being that of a true monster; a danger to friend, foe, and even Chopper himself. According to Zoro's observation, this transformation appears to be lethal to Chopper, as the amount of energy needed to maintain the form is too much for his body to handle. The only known way to end this form is by placing Chopper into the sea; this is perhaps how Chopper's Monster Point was stopped during the first time he used it, as his aftermath is similar, with him unable to move.

* Note: Although Chopper shouldn't eat three Rumble Balls within 6 hours, in the filler part of the Davy Back Fight he took two right after another in the "Hit and Deadball" game. Thus this is one of the major plotholes Toei created. However because this was done before Oda got to that part in the manga, they had no way of knowing.

Other Abilities

Chopper being the doctor of the crew, has a large knowledge of medicine and medical drugs as well as the preparation of remedies and ointments from regular fruits, roots and vegetables found on most islands. Most of this he learned during his apprenticeship under Dr. Hiruluk and Dr. Kureha.

Chopper, who originally was an animal, is also capable of speaking to and understand other animals, which came in handy on various points of the story. It should also be stated that chopper has an excellent knowledge of zoan friuts and their abilities as evidenced with the invention of the rumble ball.

Chopper Man

In a short, one-shot story by Eiichiro Oda, entitled Chopper Man, Chopper is depicted as a superhero, with members of the Straw Hat Pirates featured in various different roles (mostly villains). The story parodies the superhero, and super sentai genres, as well as One Piece itself. The characters are as follows...

Chopper Man: The hero of the story, who uses his Chopper Cape to fly and save the world. Although he can fly with the cape, he also has a private jet, called Air Force C but doesn't ride in it as its just a model. His ultimate weapon is his cuteness, which he uses through his ultimate attack, the "Kyuun Spark". If his enemy doesn't care about cuteness, he will resort to "Chopper Violence".

Namifia: Chopper Man's "lovely assistant", who is based on Nami. Resembling a secretary, with glasses and a wireless headset, she appears to be Chopper Man's manager. Namifia is greedy like her alter ego.

Dr. Usodabada: The main villain and "embodiment of evil", based on Usopp. Aside from looking exactly like Usopp, Dr. Usodabada is dressed in a doctor's coat, with a cape, and a handlebar mustache. He resides in an evil castle, with comically bent towers, with cliché'd lightning crashing behind it.

Giant Luffy Bomber: Based on Monkey D. Luffy, the Giant Luffy Bomber is a giant robot, stationed outside of Dr. Usodabada's castle, and acts as his secret, ultimate weapon. In the story, however, Chopper Man befriends it, and the Luffy bomber destroys Usodabada's castle. The Luffy Bomber appears to be covered in various guns, a possible reference to his attack names. Namifia sold it for jewelery.

Usodabadan Three Villains: Although they never appear in the story, they are referenced in the intro. One of them resembles Sanji in a lizard suit, called "Ero Monster, Sanjilops". He claims he is not a pervert but thinks about perverted things and has three cigarettes. Zoro is represented as a monster with a fundoshi, the number "1111" across his chest (which could be two "11"s), a metal nose similar to Franky's, and an onigiri for a head (an obvious play on his signature attack), named "Onigiri Mystery Man, Zorokiller". Robin is shown as a scantly clad warrior queen, named "Flower Mystery Woman Robiflowan", with six arms, and large flower petals adorning her helmet. She is always effected by the Kyuun Spark.

The short is referenced in the Ending sequence with the song "Aventure World", wherein Chopper adorns his Chopper Cape, and flies around, eventually off-screen. The story was also made into a One Piece television short, which aired at the end of episode 279.

Sanji

Sanji (サンジ, Sanji?) is a fictional character in the anime and manga One Piece.

About Sanji

Being a member of the Straw Hat Pirates, he has his bounty of 77 million Belli. Sanji is the chain-smoking cook aboard the Going Merry as a member of the Straw Hat Pirate Crew. He has superb fighting skills that only make use of the lower part of his body, in an effort to minimise damage to his hands which would impair his cooking skills. Naturally, Sanji uses an array of powerful and varied kicking moves when he fights, all with French names related to food. His cooking skills are also the best within the manga One Piece and is the protégé to Chef "Red Leg" Zeff (or "Red Shoes" Zeff" in North America) of Baratie, the floating restaurant and Sanji's mentor. According to Oda, Sanji most resembles a duck.[1] Also, Oda uses the color blue to represent Sanji, and he smells of seafood and cigarettes. [2]

In Japanese Fan Polls, including the most recent one, Sanji is consistently the third most popular character. While in the recent 4Kids poll, Sanji is the third most popular character just like the Japanese.

Differences between versions

In both the English manga, original Japanese manga, and the original Japanese anime, Sanji is a chain smoker. In the English anime, Sanji sucks on lollipops (most likely so that kids wouldn't think it's okay to smoke). In the English-language manga, Sanji often uses "crap" as an adjective while speaking. This is an attempt to convey both his extremely coarse speaking style in Japanese, as well as his use of "kuso" (roughly "feces") as an expletive; fans often translate it as "shit" because of his manner of speech. For example, he often calls Zeff "Kuso-Jiji" (roughly "shitty-geezer). In the English anime, he simply calls Zeff "old-geezer", and "crap-geezer" in the English manga. Also, in the English anime, Sanji appears to have a nasally Brooklyn accented voice (done by David Moo). It was once believed that 4Kids was going to give him a French accent and that Eric Stuart was going to be his voice actor.

Personality and Relationships

Sanji is the crew's chef and and as such he looks out for the health of his crewmates (ironically enough, he is a chainsmoker). His goal in life is to find the All Blue, a legendary ocean which contains all the fish in the world, and as such would be paradise for any cook with as much love for his work as Sanji, who holds great respect for the tools, ingredients, and art of cooking. So great is his devotion to his calling, that Sanji will not let any person or creature starve, regardless of them being friend or foe. He is very amorous, constantly flirting with any attractive woman he sees (especially Nami), earning him the nickname ero-cook, or perverted cook. However, he has sworn to never let insult or injury happen to any woman while he can still stand, regardless of how attractive they are. This is often problematic in his fighting as he can't attack female opponents; he would rather die than hurt them. All this is apparently the result of a "strict upbringing". However, also as a result, his fighting skills greatly increase when he is protecting a woman. Sanji also likes to swear a lot and is overall a bit of trashtalker, insulting his opponents while fighting - especially if they insult him or his friends first.

Sanji respects Luffy as a captain, but often gets angry at him for eating too much and showing disrespect for the aesthetics of cooking. He is constantly in verbal fights with Zoro (sometimes calling him Marimo-san) over each others' traits and they have developed a bit of a rivalry (almost like a sibling rivalry). He is very protective of the female crewmembers and Nami likes to take advantage of him, exploiting his extreme servility. Sanji originally wanted to cook Chopper, and continues to refer to him as their "emergency food supply" to tease him. However, he does consider Chopper a friend. He's also good friends with Usopp; they team up and interact often, and Sanji understands him quite well. In short, he cares as much for the crew as any Straw Hat should, but unlike Zoro, Sanji shows these feelings more. For example, he cried when Mr. 2 sacrificed himself for the Straw Hats.

Though Sanji doesnt get along with Zoro and is virtually his polar oppasite, they usually end up getting teamed together and always end up fighting eachother. On some instances they will defeat an opponent just so they can get back to fighting eachother for whatever reason at the time. He and Zoro have a sort of competition when they fight together usually stating they will defeat an absurd amount of enemies within a very short period of time. It usually starts off with both of them stating a time span usually under a minute and then proceeding to defeat them effortlessly.

Sanji likes to give himself nicknames in battles (such as Mr. Prince or Hunter) to hide his identity and overall likes to act in the background. However, before Enies Lobby he was constantly upset that he hadn't earned a bounty yet, which gave him a bit of a disadvantage in his arguments with Zoro since Zoro already had a very high bounty. Even though he has a bounty now, it is still less than Zoro's bounty by 43 million belli; combined with the fact that the wanted poster only shows a bad facial composite of him continues the running gag of him not being recognized.

Sanji's left eye is never seen in the Manga, always covered by his hair. Some anime-frames however show it, probably by mistake. It can also be seen in the Doctor Stop card in the One Piece CCG Set 2, Passage to the Grand Line. In Chapter 419, Sanji was seen holding a spyglass to his left eye.

History

Red Leg Zeff attacks

Sanji was Zeff's protégé and sous-chef, and the two had a long history together. Nine years earlier, when a young Sanji was working as a ship's cook in the North Blue, the pirate Red Leg Zeff and his crew attacked the ship. However, both ships were caught in a sudden storm, and sank. Zeff managed to save the young Sanji from drowning and the two were washed onto a rock outcropping, high above the sea.

Despite their good fortune, there was little food for them: a few rations had washed onto the rock with them, but there was no vegetation, no animals, and no way to reach the water to fish. Splitting up what little rations remained, Zeff ordered Sanji to sit at the other end of the island, and look for a ship. Sanji protested that Zeff was keeping a large sack for himself, but Zeff brushed him off, saying that as an adult, his stomach was bigger. Days passed. Sanji had no more food, but there was still no sign of a ship. Many weeks afterward (the exact amount of time differs between the manga and anime), an emaciated Sanji decided to take a chance, and kill the old man for his food. He did not kill Zeff, however: when he slashed open the old man's sack in a fit of rage, he discovered that there was no food inside, only treasure. To his horror, he realized that Zeff had eaten his own leg to survive (in the anime, he lost it while saving Sanji after becoming entangled in one of the wrecked ships, and simply ate nothing). Wracked with guilt, Sanji agreed that if they were rescued, he would help Zeff build a restaurant on the water, so that those at sea would not have to go hungry. Soon after, a ship appeared, and they were spared from death. Because of this ordeal, Sanji pledges to never refuse food to a starving individual, no matter how evil or poor they may be.

Life on the Baratie

On the Baratie, Zeff and Sanji shared an uneasy relationship, frequently getting into arguments and exchanging insults. Sanji would call Zeff an "Old Fart" or "Shitty-Geezer", ("Crap-Geezer" and "Old Geezer" in North America) and in return, Zeff would call Sanji a "stupid eggplant" ("Under-done Eggplant" or "String Bean" in North America) and tell him his cooking was awful. He started smoking at age 10, very shortly after the Baratie was founded, in an attempt to prove his "maturity" to Zeff. This scene was cut from the anime (including the original Japanese version).

Recent Chapters

Sanji, Zoro, and Sogeking have re-united with Nami and Chopper in the tunnel underneath the Bridge of Hesitation, along with the sea train conductor Kokoro and her grand-daughter Chimney, but the tunnel is flooding with water and all present are in danger of drowning. But recently Kokoro has shown that she's a mermaid, which freaked out the drowning strawhats, making them open their mouths and lose their air, but Kokoro puts them in her jacket, and saves them. They finally land on the ship Franky and Robin are on. When he wakes up, he tries to hug Robin knowing she is alright but gets kicked out of the way by Chopper and, very ironically, Nami. When the 200 captains attack the strawhat crew, Sanji disappears. However once their escape ship is destroyed, he reappears again just in time to save Kokoro, Chimney, Gonbe and Chopper from the explosion, claiming he had to do something "uncool" prior to that. As all the Buster Call ships target the group and Luffy, he and the others hear a voice telling them to jump into the sea. They do so and land on the Going Merry, which has suddenly returned. Meanwhile, Spandam recovers, ordering the Marine Battleships to fire on the Going Merry, even if Robin is onboard. When the Marines fire they strike their own ships, as the water currents shift dramatically. During his disappearance, Sanji had closed the Gate of Justice, creating the currents surrounding the ships. He and Zoro used an exhausted Luffy as a sling to send cannonballs flying towards the Battleships. After Iceberg and a Galley-La ship arrived to rescue the Strawhat crew, Merry began to fall apart. He and the rest of the crew then bid Merry farewell as she is given a viking's sea burial by fire.

Sanji helped cook for the festival the Strawhats and allies were having, which incidentally drained almost all of their remaining Belly. In Chapter 435 he received his first bounty of 77 Million Belly and is nicknamed "Black Leg", in contrast to his old mentor Zeff, who was known as "Red Leg". However, Sanji is horrified to see his picture on the bounty poster. The marines weren't able to obtain a photo of him(some one left the lens cap on the camera) and thus used a horrendous composite sketch.

Yet for all that, Sanji remained faithful to his promise nine years before, and risked his life to help defend the restaurant he helped build from the clutches of Don Krieg and his pirate armada. With the help of Monkey D. Luffy, he succeeded, but was unwilling to leave his position at Baratie to become Luffy's cook. In the end, Zeff had to remind him of the dream they both shared: to find the legendary sea, All Blue. Tearfully thanking the old man for everything, Sanji departed with Luffy to retrieve Nami, who had stolen the Going Merry and was making her way to the stronghold of the Fishman pirate, Arlong.

Abilities and powers

Sanji has mastered the martial art of Red Leg.

Red Leg is a fictional martial art that takes some inspiration from the Brazilian martial art Capoeira, which contains sweeping leg motions, acrobatics and handstands and which may have developed the use of feet due to the West African belief that hands are for creation not destruction, a theme which Sanji remarks on as he prefers to use his hands to cook, and cooking knives only on food. Red Leg also bears developmental simularity to the French martial art Savate, which was developed by street fighters and sailors, does not include knee kicks, and included the use of hands as a gripping support rather than for attack in the art's early development, which would make sense for a rocking ship. As such, Sanji can be seen as the third strongest member of the crew, after Zoro and Luffy. This being taken from the his most recent fight with Jyabura who was ranked as the third strongest CP9 member.

The Red Leg style may also have taken some inspiration from the Chinese art Tan Tui and bears an almost identical line, in name and in style, to the extremely powerful and dangerous [to both user and opponent] style Blood Leg) where all of his maneuvers come from the user's legs and feet.

His legs and feet are extremely powerful, able to smash boulders and defeat creatures much larger than himself (like bananadiles and Mo-Moo). His legs also imbue him with superior speed and agility, able to leap and run much farther than normal humans. He has stated that the reason he fights with his feet is that he doesn't want to risk damaging his hands as he needs them to cook. As such, he generally places his hands inside his pockets while fighting (except when going for a handstand).

As for his actual "attacks", Sanji has a very large number of specific kicks and techniques he uses to fight with. It should be noted that he doesn't call out an attack name whenever he kicks someone or something, but for important events and fights he usually will. Most of his attacks are said in French and are usually cooking/food terms related in some way to the specific portion of the opponent's body that he's targeting or to the nature of the attack itself. In the English anime, the attacks are changed to be funny sounding, non-existent food items that have something to do with the target area of the attack.

Common attacks are Mouton Shot (Sanji jumps and flips, and kicks with all his might into the foe's mid-region or head) and Anti-Manner Kick Course (One of Sanji's most powerful kicks where he delivers a 180 degree vertical kick upward into a giant foe's torso or back, which is usually used on those he sees as having no manners, e.g. those that attack women.)

In the Enies Lobby arc, Sanji reveals a new ability - Diable Jambe, the power to heat his lower legs to a temperature so high they glow bright red, by spinning rapidly in place. Diable means devil in French and it's also a type of dish, Jambe means leg, but the kanji reads diable's wind. The aforementioned attacks also have the word Diable Jambe preceding it (ex. Diable Jambe: Flambage Shot). The heat is so high that in less than a second of contact would set a person aflame. Sanji used this ability during his fight with Jyabura, in which his attacks weren't so effective due to his active usage of tekkai, Jyabura has honed hs techique so much to be able to move while having Tekkai activated. Sanji broke through Jyabura's tekkai, meant to absorb physical damage, with this skill.

Although Sanji fights with his legs, his arms also possess some strength, enabling him to use an array of handstands, making him more versatile in certain situations. He is also able to use one-handed handstands, proving that his arms are also quite strong. In his fight with Wanze, he uses knifes, the tools of a chef. In the battle he only used them becaused Wanze used food, so he used the knifes against the food, or the ramen.

Last but not least, Sanji is an expert cook, knowing and capable of preparing almost any kind of food with a strong sense to the aesthetics of cooking. It should also be noted that Sanji possesses a high degree of resistance against heat and fire-based attacks. And even though his degree of strength is centered on his legs, his upper body has shown to be quite resilient, allowing him to endure half of Jyabura's Jusshigan as well as a direct hit from Kuroobi's fists. It would appear that both the said defensive capabilities originated from his time while working at the Baratie; from tolerating fire while cooking food and from Zeff's kicks (Zeff tends to unnecessarily kick Sanji on the gut if the food prepared by the latter does not match his expectations). And lastly, Sanji has proven quite tactitious from time to time; evident by the ploy he played on Crocodile during the Alabasta Arc, he's also the reason behind the closing of the Gates of Justice behind Enies Lobby, supplementing the crew's escape.

Usopp

Usopp (ウソップ, Usoppu?) is a fictional character from the anime and manga One Piece.

Usopp the Pirate

Usopp's name is probably based on "Isoppu", which is the Japanese pronunciation of Aesop, the ancient Greek fabulist. Considering that "lie" in Japanese is pronounced "uso", the name Usopp can (and is most likely meant to) be taken as a portmanteau name between uso and Isopp, both defining a liar or teller of tall tales (for example, when introducing himself, Usopp is known to say "Ore wa Usopp!" which can mean either "I am Usopp!" or "I am a liar!"). Usopp's long nose is an allusion to Pinocchio, a wooden boy who possessed a nose that would stretch after he lied. His nose is nine inches long, and according to Bon Clay's standards, Usopp possesses the world's weirdest/funniest nose. Oda claims that Usopp is most represented by the armadillo.[1] Oda has also said that he uses the color yellow to represent Usopp, and he smells of gunpowder. [2]

The other aspect of Usopp besides his lying is his cowardice; he is a very timid person, or so he thinks. In extremely stressful situations, Usopp has proven to be far more courageous than he believes himself to be. He shows great resolve when his friends are threatened or mocked by outsiders.

Despite his lack of physical strength compared to other members of the crew, with the exception of Nami, Usopp seems to be much more resilient than his comrades. He suffers injuries in almost every fight he participates in, but shrugs them off after a very short period of time. Part of this is the result of care by the Straw Hats' very capable doctor, yet some of this appears to be a natural ability to absorb punishment, for the sake of comedy relief.

His goal in life is to become a proud and strong pirate like his father Yasopp of the Red Haired Pirate Crew.

According to a recent Japanese fan poll, Usopp is the 5th most popular character, he has the same rank in 4Kids polls.

Personality and Relationships

Usopp is a liar and likes to play pranks on his crew members or just goof off with Luffy and Chopper. He also likes to tell tall tales with Chopper (or Kaya when he started with it) as thankful listeners. He sometimes sees a role model in Zoro who never seems afraid but always proud. Usopp lacks a bit of self esteem and is often taken advantage of by Nami to make her weapons or repair and improve them - something he is very adept at, having constructed the ingenious weapon, the Clima tact. Usopp is also very artistic, and drew the Straw Hat Pirates Jolly Roger.

Usopp is easily scared and always tries to make up excuses so he does not have to go on an island, which are simply ignored by his teammates. Despite his timid nature, he realizes when his friends need him and will do anything to help them, even if it means to stand up to a disproportionately more powerful enemy and be severely pummeled. Usopp will also stand up and fight for not only the well-being of people, but also the ideals of them - and the ideals of a pirate, which he hold very high. In battle he normally tries to trick his enemy by telling tales or deceiving the enemy. His ability to bear loads and loads of damage is one of his best traits, in addition to his cunning and intelligence, saving the Straw Hats on many occasions. Also he proved to be very brave during the Enies Lobby arc; he stood up to Jabura, and later Lucci after he had seemingly beaten Luffy, proving that he was not afraid to die for his crewmates, and it was he who destroyed the World Governments flag.

After meeting the giants Dorry and Broggy in the Little Garden arc, Usopp wants to travel to Elbaf one day and meet the proud warriors there. Usopp often sees the Elbaf warriors he has met in his travels as sources of inspiration in his journey to become a brave warrior of the sea; A dream spurred on by his cowardly nature, and his recent feelings of inferiority compared to the other crewmembers.

Crew roles

Also, Usopp possesses a genius for invention, practical engineering, and strategy. Amongst his many contraptions is the Clima-Tact, a staff that can generate rain and lightning storms, which he built for Nami and the Kabuto, a combination staff and slingshot type weapon, which he built for his alter-ego, Sogeking.

Several times throughout One Piece, Usopp's courage is put to the test as he is forced to fight to help out his crewmates. He manages a lot more than he would ever believe of himself, defeating Chu, a fishman; and with Chopper's help the team of Mr. 4 & Miss Merry Christmas.

Though all the Straw Hat Pirates were very fond of their ship, the Going Merry, Usopp felt the most for it, as it was given to them by Kaya. Because of this he did much of the repairs on it until Luffy decided they needed a professional shipwright.

History

The Liar Usopp

Usopp calls himself a pirate and takes in three younger kids, Ninjin (meaning "Carrot" in Japanese. Renamed Carrot in the dub), Tamanegi (meaning Onion in Japanese, Renamed Onion in the dub), and Piiman (meaning Pepper in Japanese. Renamed Pepper in the dub), as his "crew"; he dubs the groups "Usopp's Pirates", or in the American version by 4Kids, the "Veggie Pirates".

Usopp is the son of Yasopp, a pirate who is part of Red-Haired Shanks' crew. Yasopp left Usopp and hs mother to become a pirate when Usopp still were very young, something that created a deep facination with pirates for Usopp.

The origin of Usopp's lies were revealed very late by the butler Merry. A couple of years after that his father had left for sea, Usopp's mother became severely sick, and was dying. At his mother's death bed, Usopp begun to lie to keep his dying mother's spirit up, with tales that Yasopp had come back to get take them with him on his journey, and everything would become better again. Even after she died Usopp continued to run around yelling that the pirates were coming. Merry thought that Usopp's lies were rather his dreams than actually wanting to trick the villagers.

Many of the villagers make a show of chasing him and throwing things at him for running through the town, but they are used to his antics. Some villagers even use his daily run through town as a sort of alarm clock. He also makes up stories about adventures to entertain Kaya, who is sick and has to stay in bed all day.

Ironically, most of the tall tales he told Kaya have came true at some point during the Straw Hats' voyage. These include meeting a Giant Goldfish (as the crew was leaving Little Garden) and fighting against a giant mole (against Ms. Merry Christmas during the climax in the Alabasta arc). Perhaps one day he will actually get 8,000 followers and become a captain.

When the Black Cat pirates came to town, Usopp, along with Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro and Nami, fight the pirates and their leader, Captain Kuro, who has been spending three years posing as a caretaker for Kaya so he can inherit her fortune when they kill her.

Aftermath and Life on the seas

After Luffy defeats Kuro and the Black Cat Pirates, Usopp disbands "Usopp's Pirates" and leaves them to become the local liars. He was going on his own way, but Luffy invited him to travel on the Going Merry with him and the rest of his crew. Luffy named him sniper for the crew as he has inherited his father's sharp shooting skills. After joining, he creates the flag for the Straw Hat Pirate Crew after Luffy proves unable to draw, and he also paints it on the sail of Going Merry. Usopp also tried to claim the position of "Captain" several times, much to Luffy's objection, becoming the self-procalimed lieutenant.

Little Garden

Reaching their second island on the Grand Line, Little Garden, meant a somewhat of a change for Usopp. The island's inhabitants, the giants Dorry and Brogi, fascinated Usopp. They have fought for a century; Their never-ending battle for nothing, a battle of pride and honor which are more important than their own lives - a battle of men, as Usopp defined it, amazed him. According to him, they are exactly what he wanted to be, the greatest warrior of the seas; to a point where he says that one day he will die with pride, and his last words will be "I am Usopp, the great warrior of the sea!". Usopp was moved to rage when he had discovered that the sake which came from their ship, which they gave to Dorry and Brogi, exploded and interrupted the battle, and even attempted to attack Mr. 5, knowing the risk. He still wishes to visit Elbaf, the island the giants came from, and the scene of him saying that was constantly featured after Water 7's events.

Sogeking

After the battle with Aokiji, Usopp watched his friends easily beaten which scares him and makes him question his belonging in the crew. He was afraid that the crew is encountering stronger adversaries and since he was the weakest crewmember he started to lose confidence. A series of conflicts, particularly Luffy's choice to get a new ship, results in Usopp leaving the crew. After a battle with Luffy, where Usopp displayed an uncharacteristically vicious fighting style, he gained the now terminally-damaged Going Merry. Usopp was later detained by CP9.

After being freed from CP9 captivity by Sanji during the Sea train chase, Usopp announced that he has no business with the Straw Hat Pirates and disappears. Yet Usopp came back a minute later in a disguise. He was wearing a mask and a cape, using the alias "Sogeking" (sogeki means sniper, so Sogeking ("そげキング" Sogekingu) is a pun meaning "Sniper King", which is only pushed further when the World Gov. nicknames him "King of Snipers" Sogeking). According to his stories, Sogeking is from an island of snipers, Sharpshooter Island, that can be found in your heart, and Usopp has even written a themesong for this identity.

He helped Franky and Sanji in order to rescue Nico Robin but they fail to do so. After being in the detached cart 4 and 3 with Sanji, they were found by the Franky Family and finally reunited with Luffy. When they confronted CP9, Sogeking unveiled a new weapon, a long staff with a more powerful slingshot attached called "Kabuto".

All of the Straw Hats (including Galley-La and Franky Family) realize who he really is except for Luffy and Chopper. It is unknown if Usopp is going to rejoin the crew. His motive for concealing his identity is both so that he will not become a fugitive with an inflated bounty over his head, as attacking the Marine Base would cause this subsequent action and to keep his identity a secret towards the crew (even if it only worked on Chopper and Luffy)

Recent Chapters

Sogeking (Usopp), Zoro, and Sanji re-united with Nami and Chopper in the tunnel underneath the Bridge of Hesitation, along with the sea train conductor Kokoro and her grand-daughter Chimney, but the tunnel was flooding with water and they were in danger of drowning, until Kokoro transformed into a mermaid and saved all of them. After arriving on the escape ship, in a rare display of courage, Sogeking (Usopp) suggested they go help Luffy defeat Lucci, but Zoro stopped him. However, several Buster Call ships arrived where they were and attacked the group with several Marine lieutenants and captains. Through a large hole in the tower Luffy and Lucci are fighting in, Usopp saw Luffy lying face down in a pool of blood. He took off his mask and called out Luffy's name, provoking him with insults and encouraging to get up and finish off Lucci, which he does. Following Lucci's defeat, the marines then proceed to destroy the strawhat's escape ship. Luckily, Sanji manages to rescue Chopper and the others at the last minute. The marines' next target is Luffy, who is too battered to move. The Strawhats, feeling cornered, suddenly hear an unknown voice calling them out to the sea. Usopp then tells Robin to toss Luffy into the sea, as the rest of the crew soon follow to land on a mysteriously restored Going Merry. After all the Straw Hats are back on the ship, Usopp uses Kabuto to fire Smoke Stars at the BC ships, preventing them from getting a clear shot on the retreating Merry. Just before the Merry began to fall apart and Luffy and the crew gave her a viking funeral, Usopp donned his Sogeking mask once again to hide his tears. When first seen on his return to Water 7, Ussop was sitting on Oimo's shoulder, questioning whether or not to follow the giants to Elbaf. When Garp, Luffy's grandfather, paid a visit to his grandson, Usopp was peeking into the room along with Yukozuna. Usopp is enjoying the large party in Water 7 along with everyone else, but as Sogeking. He now has a bounty of 30 million, however as his alter ego Sogeking, now known as "Sogeking, King of Snipers"". Interestingly, this is Usopp's second time appearing on a wanted poster with someone else's name on it, as he is also on Luffy's.

While he wanted to rejoin the Straw Hats, he would prefer Luffy to beg him to rejoin. Last time he was seen he was practicing different scenarios of rejoining the crew.

Powers and abilities

Usopp is Luffy's First Mate and has outstanding marksmanship abilities with his slingshot and is probably on his way of becoming one of the best snipers in the One Piece world. His slingshot being his prime form of combat, he has a few different types of ammunition. He is also not averse to using anything around him as a weapon. He uses eggs to blind opponents and rocks in the slingshot when out of ammunition. He is also able to absorb unbearable amounts of damage (he once got struck by a four ton, metal baseball bat to the head only to continue fighting minutes later) and sometimes uses his hammer for close combat. (At least twice he rapidly hit someone with it, along with an 'Usopp Rubberband' to make the opponent flinch - a running gag is when he attacks in a frenzy with the Usopp Hammer, he will at least once use the Usopp Wagomu.)

Usopp's greatest ability is his penchant to outrun just about anybody and anything. He utilizes hit and run tactics, provoking an enemy while his teammates attack or waiting for a sufficient opportunity himself. This most likely will continue until he runs out of ammunition or he tires out.

His ammunition has great range, from rotten eggs and hot sauce to shurikens and powerful explosives. His attacks are named Stars, e.g. Powder Star. Usopp has other attacks unrelated to projectiles, though they are mainly jokes. These include the 5 Ton Hammer (which is actually only about 2 kilograms) and Usopp Noise, where he plugs his ears and scratches a chalkboard. He has also recently started using Skypiean dials for attacks, such as using the Breath Dial to house explosive gas, using the Lamp Dial to blind his foes, and using the Impact Dial to absorb and reflect blows.

Usopp improves his sight with special goggles. He purchased an upgraded pair in Loguetown, but the actual scene of him purchasing them was cut out in the 4Kids Entertainment dub. The scene was also absent in the original manga due to lack of room.

Sogeking has recently introduced a new weapon - "Kabuto" - a slingshot connected to a long staff. The exact properties of the "kabuto" are unknown, but he used it to launch a bird shaped flame at the World Government's flag, in a symbolic gesture of defiance after Luffy asked him to. It seems as if "Kabuto" uses several rubberbands, making the shots somewhat faster and stronger. It is also very likely that it's powered by dials; Usopp has used them often since Skypiea, and their presence is suggested by the weapon's extremely high power and range. The weapon was named "Kabuto" probably because of the shape of the head of the staff resembles the trunk of a kabuto beetle.

Nami

Nami (ナミ, Nami?) is a fictional character from the anime and manga series One Piece. Nami means "Wave" in Japanese.

In a recent Japanese Fan Poll, Nami was ranked 7th most popular character, making her the least popular member of the Straw Hats in Japan (unless Franky joins the crew, as he is ranked 13th). She is more popular in the United States, where a 4Kids fan poll ranked her the fourth most popular anime character.

About Nami

Being a member of the Straw Hat Pirates, she has her own bounty of 16 million Belli. She is the second member of the Straw Hat Pirates to appear in the (anime) series, but the third to align herself with the crew, and the fifth to actually join. Possibly one of the best (or even the best) navigators currently sailing the Grand Line, Nami is more-or-less in charge when the crew is sailing on the Going Merry (Merry Go in the English translations), somewhat fulfilling the roles of treasurer and quartermaster as well (mirroring real-life, where the quartermaster was more or less in charge on pirate ships and the captain being more of a strong fighter whom the crew could put their trust in).

Nami has a tattoo on her left shoulder which represents mikan and pinwheels (a homage to her past), where she used to have a tattoo for being the chief cartographer for Arlong's Crew. Near the beginning of the series, Nami wore thick, low cut leather boots and a simple blouse. However, during the Arlong Park arc and thereafter, Nami wore open-toed shoes and more revealing outfits (With the tattoo no longer being a secret). She seemed to have abandoned the shoes for high-heeled boots as of Chapter 435. She usually pairs her tops with skirts with rings on them. Her overall physique matured suddenly (though this is, most likely, a simple change in style of artwork).

According to the author (in response to a fan's question), Nami's dress size was 34-22-34. The author has also replied to a fan's question to saying that right now Nami's measurements are as follows: Height 169 B 95 W 55 H 85, though her breasts seem to grow and then "reset" throughout the arcs (this is much more obvious in the manga). [1] He has also said that Nami resembles a cat, that he uses the color orange to represent her, and she smells of mikan and money.[2][3]

Her nickname, "Cat Burgler", comes from "dorobō neko", which can also mean "manstealer" in Japanese.

Early One Piece

Even before One Piece officially began, Oda had ideas for a Nami-like character.

In the original pilot for One Piece, Romance Dawn: version 1, there was a character called Silk, who was the daughter of a pirate and also abandoned when she was young. Appearance wise, Silk was almost exactly like Nami in both face and dress, although Silk had much longer hair. While some aspects of her personality were close to Nami's, she was still very different from Nami.

In Romance Dawn: version 2 there was another Nami-like character called Ann. Ann, like Silk, had clothes similar to Nami's. Ann's personality was much closer to Nami's, but it was still a long way off from the one Nami was ultimately given by Oda.

Personality and Relationships

Along with Nico Robin, Nami is one of the smartest of the Straw Hats and the third smartest character during the East Blue saga according to Oda, the first being Ben Beckman of the Red-Haired pirates and the 2nd being Captain Kuro.[4] She is an excellent navigator and has the ability to recognize and analyze even the slightest changes in the weather through sheer intuition (no equipment required), thus saving the ship and the crew from the very unstable Grand Line weather on multiple occasions. She is also in charge of the money the crew has.

She respects Luffy's qualities as a leader, but often gets angry of his irrational thinking and short attention span. She is also the one who gives orders on the ship (much to the resentment of Zoro) because Luffy is to simpleminded to know how to give orders. In such situations, she sometimes tends to get into violent outbreaks. This may also be caused by traits of other crew members such as Zoro's sleeping, Usopp and Chopper acting childish etc. Acting as the "mother" of the crew, Nami doesn't understand or approve of the boys' often macho attitudes and principles. These are the only situations where Nami doesn't get the final word, as seen when she tried to talk sense into Luffy and Usopp's great fallout.

Nami is greedy and will do anything, aside from endangering her friends, for money, due to her past - After having gathered money all her life, Nami is naturally accustomed to it, and after being freed from Arlong she finally makes some money herself. However, she has stated that if she should choose between her money and friends, she'd choose her friends. She is very manipulative, and often takes advantage of Sanji for his devotion to her and Usopp to maintain her weapons. Roronoa Zoro tries not to fall for her schemes, but ends up a victim like the rest, usually due to debt. Nami also tries to avoid fights this way and will try to hide in groups or send others before her. However, since the invention of her clima tact (A weapon that forms weather patterns, also called the Weather Enforcer in the English dub), she is now seen fighting her own battles instead of becoming the 'easy target' - she was tired of being the one that should be saved.

Nami also has an obsession with fashion, as she is never seen wearing the same clothes. This was not present in the early chapters and started after the Captain Kuro arc. This is similar to Bulma, the female main character of Dragon Ball (Eiichiro Oda's favorite manga), who is never seen with the same hairstyle. When Nami goes shopping, she sometimes goes to exquisite boutiques and tries on stuff, just to leave stating that she is searching for something more casual.

Her two favorite things are money and mikan (mandarin oranges), often translated to tangerines (the English manga uses "tangerines"), because of her love of her foster mother, Bellemere. It seems she is more fond of her oranges tree than the money; when the crew returned to Water 7 and had their belongings returned to them, Nami was overjoyed at seeing the trees that she hugged one of the tree with tears coming out of her eyes, but did not hug the money like she usually does. And when Franky was talking about what he did with the 200 million belies that he stole, Nami wasn't the one that got upset but it was Sanji. It indicates money is second only to her prized trees.

Nami's dream is to draw a perfect map of the world, a task not yet accomplished by anyone due to the harsh nature of the oceans in Grand Line. The first map Nami plotted was the island Cocoyashi village is on.

Nami also appears to have a high tolerance for alcohol, similar to Roronoa Zoro.

History

Belle-Mère

Nami is an orphan found by Belle-Mère, a female Marine, on a battlefield as an infant. The marine adopted her along with Nojiko, another child, and the three became as close as a real family. However, this ended when the infamous Fish-Man Pirate Arlong took over Cocoyashi Village (or Coco Village in the English language manga and dub), their adopted hometown and imposed a fee on every single adult and child in the village in order to 'live'.

Since Belle-Mère could not pay for her entire family's monthly fee for living, Belle-Mère was used as an 'example' by Arlong to demonstrate to the townspeople what will happen to them if they ever go against him or fail to pay the fee. Belle-Mère is then brutally murdered by a shot from Arlong in front of Nami and Nojiko. Nami was then kidnapped and forced to become a cartographer for Arlong. However, Arlong struck a deal with Nami: if she brought him one hundred million Belli (the form of currency in One Piece), he would free her village. She spent eight years making maps and stealing treasure from Pirates in order to buy back her village.

Meeting Luffy

It was during this time that she met Luffy during the situation with Buggy in Orange Town (as seen in the Buggy the Clown Arc) and temporaily joined up with him with the reasoning that she will get most of the treasure that is found.

After helping defeat Captain Kuro in Syrup Village (i.e: Captain Kuro arc), and reaching the Baratie restaurant with Luffy, Nami took off with the crew's loot and ship and headed for Arlong Park. Nami was only 7 million beli short of fulfilling her end of the deal, but Arlong shamelessly used Nezumi, a corrupt Marine captain, to steal all of the money, thus ensuring that Nami would forever be in his crew, without breaking his promise.

Later, Luffy arrives and after seeing a distraught Nami in the process of carving the Arlong tattoo off her arm and screaming Arlong's name in anger, he accepts her plea for help. Then along with Sanji, Zoro and Usopp he battles Arlong and his elites and defeats them all. Nami's village is freed, and she rejoins the crew as a permanent member. In her way out of the village, Nami wished to say goodbye to no one. She left the money back in Nojiko's house, and runs onto the Going Merry after stealing all of the villagers' wallets at the same time. This causes certain opinions for Nami to spring up, like Sanji cheering on Nami, Zoro saying that Nami might betray them again, Usopp saying that she hasn't changed, and Luffy laughing.

Recent Chapters

Nami and Chopper had re-united with Sanji, Zoro, and Sogeking in the tunnel underneath the Bridge of Hesitation, along with the sea train conductor Kokoro and her grand-daughter Chimney, but the tunnel was flooding with water and all of them were in danger of drowning.

Just when the entire group was doomed for a watery grave, Kokoro emerged as a gigantic mermaid-like creature. They landed on the escape ship Franky and Robin are on, which, as soon as she woke up, hugged Robin immediately afterwards. She and the rest of the crew were then waiting on the escape ship for Luffy to finish his fight as they faced off against over 200 Marine captains and lieutenants. After Luffy finally beat Lucci, the marines destroyed their escape ship and were about to end Luffy as well, since he was too bruised to move. Nami and the crew suddenly hear a voice calling them out to the sea. With no time to waste, the Strawhats with Kokoro and the others (who were saved in the nick of time by Sanji) jump down towards the sea to land on the mysteriously reappeared Going Merry. Using her expert skill in navigation she guided Merry around the whirlpools--a feat only once witnessed in the Davy back fight. After Iceberg arrived on a Galley-La ship just as Merry started to fall apart, she and the rest of the crew bid Merry a emotional final farewell as Luffy set her ablaze in a viking funeral. She was seen depressed when she assumed she lost her trees, the 100 million Belli and their other stuff. However, fortunately the people of Water 7 had confiscated their stuff earlier when they thought they are the assassins that tried to assassinate Iceburg. Nami was overjoyed to get back her trees. Surprisingly, she apparently wasn't as concerned for the 100 million Belli.

Nami is later seen lounging by a pool while eavesdropping on Luffy and Koby's conversation with a Den Den Mushi about military technology (such as putting seastone on the bottom of military ships). When she heard them laughing and catching up on old times, she stopped listening to the conversation to give them some privacy.

Recently, in Chapter 435, Nami received her first bounty: 16 Million Belly. Amusingly this puts her above Buggy the Clown, the villain introduced in the same arc as Nami. Out of all the Straw Hats, she is the only one complaining the fact she got a bounty. It is found that the photographer told her he was a W7 reporter so she willingly possed.

Powers and abilities

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Nami is a highly skilled navigator and cartographer. She has the innate ability to sense changes in the weather and can even predict the appearance of the supposedly unpredictable cyclones of the Grand Line. She is also an excellent thief and pickpocket who can steal small items such as keys on light encounters without the victim noticing.

Nami is not as skilled a combatant as some of the Straw Hats, although she is able in wielding a staff to protect herself. She is able to unleash quick and moderately powerful strikes, and during the Alabasta arc and beyond, uses a weather manipulating staff Usopp created for her, the Clima Tact, to fight. The weapon is actually partly used for party tricks, but using certain combinations, Nami turns the tomfoolery of Usopp into a deadly force to be reckoned with, and is able to defeat one of the strongest members of the Baroque Works, Miss Doublefinger (Mr. 1's partner agent, and Baroque Works' second strongest female agent, after Miss All-Sunday); one of the CP9 members and two of Skypiea's Priests, Hotori and Kotori, with the help of Gan Fall.

Currently, Nami has been given a Dial enhanced Clima-Tact, the "Perfect Clima-Tact", by Usopp. The new weapon was powerful enough to wipe out an entire group of soldiers; with the Perfect Clima-tact, she also managed to defeat CP9's Kalifa, securing her place as one of the crew's most valuable members.

Before receiving her Climatact in the Alabasta Arc, Nami's fighting style was much more deceitful. She usually shamelessly manipulates one of her crewmates to fight in her place, usually by blackmailing Zoro, charming Sanji, or ordering Luffy around. She also has extreme luck, situation arise and put out of the line of battle during fights. In a few rare cases, she'd used her looks to distract an opponent from attacking her. This manipulative attitude disappeared from the Alabasta Arc and beyond as she began to fight her own battles.

Some common techniques include Thunderbolt Tempo/Tempest (using Heat and Cool Balls, a cloud is formed, and by sending a Thunder Ball in, a huge bolt of lightning is summoned) and Mirage Tempo/Tempest (by manipulating the heat of the surrounding, Nami can create illusory copies of herself, which is further augmented by the Perfect Clima Tact's Mirage Tempo Fata Morgana).

Roronoa Zoro

Roronoa Zoro (ロロノア・ゾロ, Roronoa Zoro?) , known in the 4Kids dub and VIZ manga as "Roronoa Zolo" is a fictional character in the anime and manga One Piece.

About Zoro

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Being a member of the Straw Hat Pirates, he had a bounty of 60 million Belly after the Alabasta Arc, which was raised to 120 million after the events of Enies Lobby. According to Oda, Zoro resembles a shark.[1] Also, Oda uses the color green to represent Zoro, and he smells of steel. [2]

Originally, the American version of the manga(VIZ) spelled his name as "Roronoa Zoro", but it was changed to "Zolo" in chapter 50. His name was changed in the North American English versions possibly for trademark reasons, and to match up with the dub by 4Kids Entertainment.

His family name, Roronoa, comes from the real-life French pirate François l'Ollonais. This is because there is no differentiation between "R" and "L" in Japanese, so the name may also be said R'Orronais. His first name was made by his birth date. He was born on November 11th, and if the date is written it down in numbers it will appear as 11/11 which is a referred to a "Zorome" in Japan, which means palindrome (same sequence of numbers read forward or backward, like 1234321 or 1221) thus came the name Zoro. Although it has been mistaken many times, it wasn't inspired by the Masked-Swordsman Zorro.

Zoro is a mighty swordsman who fights with santōryū, three daito katana, and his own unique fighting style. Though not a samurai, he appears to maintain a certain degree of bushido, and is frequently mistaken for one. Unlike Luffy and most of the other Strawhats, Zoro has been known to kill his opponents if he has to, though never in cold blood.

In Japanese Fan Polls, Zoro is consistently the second most popular character. While in a poll recently done by 4Kids, Zoro is the most popular character by a landslide.

Eiichiro Oda stated that he made Zoro as a bodyguard of Buggy in earlier versions of the story. He scrapped that idea for the final version of One Piece. Also, an early short story by Oda called Monsters features a samurai character named Ryuma who bears strong physical resemblance to Zoro. Zoro's nemesis, Dracule "Hawkeye" Mihawk looks like a more stylized version of a character named Cyrano from that story.

Personality and relationships

Zoro has a stern, serious and distanced personality, but unlike Robin he often reacts in a goofy and exaggerated comic style due to his gruff, impatient attitude. When the crew sails from one island to another, he normally either trains with weights or just sleeps and is normally awakened in a rather violently comical way by either Nami or Sanji. He also likes sake, almost to the degree that Luffy likes meat, but like Nami, he never gets drunk due to his inhumanly-high tolerance for alcohol. It's interesting to know that both he and Luffy's preference reflects certain elements; for example, Luffy, who likes meat, when in battle, tends to get his own flesh beaten senseless by seemingly more powerful adversaries, while Zoro, who likes sake, tends to bleed profusely when in a similar situation. The Straw Hat's, especially Luffy, Sanji, and Nami like to make fun of Zoro for his lack of orientation. (Zoro often gets lost, even in small spaces or when he is led by someone). Even though his sense of direction is very poor, he has other strong senses and is often one of the first members of the crew to hear an enemy approaching or sense danger. Zoro likes to compete with Sanji and they often get into fights over petty matters, often at inopportune moments and with many childish, colorful words. However, when the two finally manage to put aside their differences in battle they make a devastating team, possibly in part of their wish to out-do each other.

Zoro is the swordsman of the crew, and therefore normally fights other swordsmen of enemy groups such as Cabaji the Acrobat in the Buggy the Clown arc or Mr. 1 in the Alabasta arc. All in all, he is not particularly picky when fighting his opponents (unlike Sanji, who prepares to fight male foes as he would rather die before directly harming a female adversary). Through this, he developed a few rivalries.. His goal is to become the world's best swordsman. To accomplish this, he has to defeat Dracule Mihawk who, as of now in the story, holds this title. He confronted Mihawk once during the Baratie arc but lost to a 6 inch knife and was left with the huge scar on the front of his torso, which was caused by Mihawk's Black Sword (Grosses messer). After his defeat Zoro vowed to never lose in terms of swordsmanship to anyone, and this was one of the very, very few scenes where Zoro cried.

Zoro has a unique relationship with Master Chief Petty Officer Tashigi of the Marines. Tashigi and Zoro met in Loguetown, where she helped him search for new katana. Tashigi says that she wants to confiscate all great swords from the pirates and headhunters who wield them, not realizing that Zoro is one of those pirates. Zoro defeated her once but refused to fight her again in later confrontations, due to her uncanny resemblance to his childhood friend, Kuina. Whenever he sees her, he runs away claiming that she is the one person he cannot fight.

Zoro can also be very vigorous and won't back down when he is determined to achieve a goal or defeat an enemy. On Little Garden, he attempted to slice off his feet to escape death and return to the battle, resulting in scars around both his ankles - this also shows his habit of not thinking things through. When Zoro has the intention to fight seriously, he normally ties his black bandana (which is usually tied around his left upper arm) over his head.

* Note: Zoro's bandana and pants are shown in dark green in the anime; however, it's always black in the manga color pages and book covers.

History

Zoro's vow

As a boy, Zoro trained in a dojo. Even as a child, Zoro was strong enough to defeat most adults. However, there was one person Zoro could not beat - the sensei's daughter, Kuina. After their 2000th fight (and Kuina's 2000th victory) Zoro challenged her in private for one more match - with real swords. He lost. Afterwards Zoro cried out of frustration, that he cannot fullfil his dream of becoming the world's best swordsman if he cannot beat Kuina. After Zoro said that was his dream, Kuina started to cry as well, explaining that she wants to be the best swordsman too, but her father says that girls can't be master swordsmen since they will mature into the physically weaker gender, and for her the process is already beginning. Zoro yelled at her and told her she shouldn't say such things because she can beat him, and the two make a promise - that either of them must become the worlds best swordsman. The next day, Kuina died falling down the stairs of her house.

* Note: In the English dub by 4Kids, this scene was censored and instead she was written to have been badly hurt by a group from a nearby town and was unable to fight anymore.

Zoro, remembering the promise, decided to fulfill the promise for both of them, and he asked the teacher for Kuina's sword, Wado Ichimonji (Wadō Ichimonji), and he started to develop a new fighting style - santōryū, a three-swords-style. Before her sudden death, Zoro fought with two swords but after her death, Zoro started using her sword as well, clenched in his mouth.

Life on the seas

Somehow he learned of Mihawk, nicknamed "Hawkeye", who is currently the greatest swordsman in the world. Eventually, Zoro went to sea looking to find and challenge Mihawk to a duel but somehow got lost and could not return to his home. Since fighting is more or less the only thing Zoro is really good at, he would usually take on a bounty hunter job in order to pay for sword repairs and meals. From then on, he quickly made a reputation as a "Pirate Hunter". Because of his reputation, Zoro was offered a position and a number in Baroque Works because of his bounty hunting skills, but declined when he was not allowed to "Be The Boss". Afterwards, he killed the person who offered, the late Mr. 6 of Baroque Works.

A moment of kindness landed Zoro in trouble with Helmeppo, the wimpy son of the Marine captain Axe-Hand Morgan. Zoro joined Monkey D. Luffy's crew after being saved from execution by the Marines, and is now one of Luffy's crew as the first mate. Holding on to his dream of becoming the greatest swordsman in the world he only joined Luffy to accomplish that goal, though Luffy doesn't mind - on the contrary, he only sees it natural that the greatest swordsman and the greatest pirate are on the same crew.

Abilities and powers

Zoro is a master swordsman, able to use one, two and three swords in varying attack styles, although he is most comfortable with his Santōryū (literally: three sword style). Lacking a third hand for a third sword, Zoro holds his third sword in his mouth.

Zoro is Luffy's first mate and is the second strongest member of the crew, with only Luffy surpassing him in strength. Zoro is arguably one of the strongest humans in One Piece; while most super powered heroes and villains (with the exception of Luffy as the Gomu Gomu no Mi does not contribute to his tremendous strength) gain power from eating one of the Devil Fruits, Zoro has gained his powers through hard work and training in his sword techniques, some of which can be used as projectiles - using the air itself to hurt the enemy. Even without his swords, he has monstrous strength (in one instance he lifted and tossed an entire building at an opponent) and he can use some sword techniques without his swords. Zoro has shown to pack powerful punches even developing the ability to pump his arms up with pure muscle, allowing him to break Tekkai with ease. Zoro's endurance is also near superhuman, probably as great or nearly as great as Luffy's. His endurance truly shows in the fact he has defeated incredibly strong opponents (like Hachi and Mr. 1) at their peak when he was greatly injured to the point of near death.

All of Zoro's attacks are puns and have multiple meanings. Some common techniques are Oni Giri (Demon Slash, if read as one word it sounds like "onigiri" which means "riceball"), a three-sword attack where all swords are slashed at the same time to form an asterisk, and 36/72/108 Pondo Hou (36/72/108 Pound Cannon / 36/72/108 Phoenixes of Passion and Desire), a projectile attack for which the power increases according to how many swords are used. See Santōryū for information on the sword technique, and the techniques of its sole practitioner.

His Pōndo Hō attacks are reference to the 36 passions of the Buddhism (Sight, Hearing, Speech, Smell, Touch, Thought and on to those desires, Good, Evil, Neutrality, and onto those desires, Purity, Corruption. Total number of combinations: 36)

It is also interesting to note that Zoro's newest power, Asura, actually takes its name from a Hindu cast of demons that were enemies to the gods, which was itself related to the word Ahura. In some sects of the Hindu religion, the belief that the Asura are supreme and that the devas are actually evil is known as Zoroastrian meaning that Zoro's name and technique names may have all come from the same place, though it is only speculation at this point.

Zoro's swords

Current swords

Currently Zoro uses the following swords:

* Wadō Ichimonji, (The One Road of Harmony). This is Zoro's most important sword. It was once Kuina's sword and is the sword he puts in his mouth when using santoryu. This appears to be his most prized possession. This sword is an excellent grade sword.

* Sandai Kitetsu (Third Generation Demon-Splitter, known as Kitetsu III in the Viz translation). Sandai Kitetsu is a Wazamono Zoro obtained for free from Ippon-Matsu in Roguetown. A fine grade sword.

Previous swords

* Zoro had two swords he used in his right and left hands since his first appearance. It's possible that these two swords were the ones he had used before Kuina's death. The two swords were destroyed by "Hawk eye" Mihawk during the Don Krieg Arc.

* Yosaku and Johnny's Sword. Zoro borrowed these swords to fight Hatchan during Arlong Park Arc.

* Yubashiri (Snow Run), an extremely light but strong sword, and is one of the world's 50 Ryō Wazamono, and a fine grade sword. This sword was destroyed in the battle against the Marine Captains on the Bridge of Hesitation (chapter 426). The broken sword is still kept by Zoro, as seen clearly at the beginning of chapter 431. It is possible that he kept the hilt in order to have it repaired.

* After the Yubashiri was destroyed by a Marine Captain, Zoro picked up a Marine cutlass and used it for a short time while fighting the Buster Call.

Miscellaneous information

It should be noted that the wazamono swords of One Piece are most likely based on actual swords shown in this list of wazamono swords.

Zoro often speaks with his sword held in his mouth, though it's unknown how he manages to do so. The creator of the series, Eiichiro Oda, has said that it is his heart that allows him to speak, though Oda is known for giving joke answers to fans' questions, as well as just making up answers on the spot to avoid leaving a fan's question unanswered. One possibility is that he learned ventriloquism on his own in order to communicate while fighting.

Monkey D. Luffy

About Luffy

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
He is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates (sometimes referred to as the "Luffy Pirates") and comes from Fuschia Town. Luffy had the highest bounty in the East Blue with 30 million Berries after his defeat of Arlong, but the bounty increased to 100 million Berries when he defeated the Seven Warlords of the Sea member Sir Crocodile, and again to 300,000,000 after Enies Lobby and his entanglement with CP9 member Rob Lucci.

He has clashed with other Devil Fruit users many times; he has also made many good friends who have eaten the Fruit but are not part of his crew, such as Dalton, and Mr. 2 Bon Clay. His favorite food is any kind of meat.
In Japanese fan polls, Luffy always is the most popular character. In a recent 4Kids character poll, he was named the 2nd popular character.

Appearance

Luffy is renowned for wearing his trademark Straw Hat (in which he gets his nickname 'Straw Hat Luffy' from) which was given to him when was young by the legendary pirate captain Red-Haired Shanks. His outfit somewhat mimicks Shanks' own outfit in that he wears short trousers and sandals. Luffy also wears a red vest and has a scar underneath his left eye and short black hair.

Luffy, for some reason, has the same outfit over most of the series, as opposed to Nami, Robin, Sanji, or even Zoro. Luffy may wear a different outfit to suit the climate of an island (like Drum Island or Alabasta), but will switch back to his trademark vest and shorts after the adventures on that island are over. However, he changed into black shorts instead of blue during the Enies Lobby arc though he only did this because the shorts have pockets and he could use them to carry food.

Oda Eiichiro has mentioned that Luffy mostly resembles a monkey (he sometimes even makes a monkey face). Also according to Oda, he uses the color red to represent Luffy; and Luffy smells like meat.

Personality and Relationships

At first glance, Luffy does not appear to be very intelligent. However, because he views the world in a straightfoward and simple manner, he occasionally is the only person who can see past events that have taken place and realizes the true goal.

Although Luffy is fairly lightheaded and a funny character, he has a strong sense of determination and commitment and will do anything to stand up for his friends and comrades. Luffy is simple-minded and can easily be amazed by the simplest things. He likes to make fun of other's imperfections and character traits (though he is rarely better). Luffy seems to have an unstoppable appetite (This characteristic is common to the Japanese archetype of the (at times simple-minded) young male hero/adventurer with a heart of gold, as in the case of Son Goku of Dragon Ball fame for example, which is Eiichiro Oda's favorite manga.) He also seems to have little to no fear (only dreading his grandfather) and great courage to back it up as well as unbelievable strength. Ever since consuming the devil fruit he has shown little to no fear over his inability to swim, much like his brother. An example of this is because when they are sailing he can usually be found on the stem of the Going Merry, he calls this his "special seat" and is usually hanging off of it without minding the danger of falling overboard. Much of these traits are common among Ds.

Luffy's dream is to find the One Piece and become Pirate King. He knows that to achieve his goal, he will have to defeat many strong opponents, including the World Government and his childhood hero Shanks. He is not frightened by this, but anticipates the fight.

Family

Luffy's family has been through the series shrouded in mystery. His father is Monkey D. Dragon, the infamous revolutionary, who left Luffy and Ace to be raised by their grandfather. Luffy was oblivious about Dragon despite his fame, and states he didn't know he had a father. He has an older brother, Portgas D. Ace, also a powerful pirate, and they are quite close. Luffy's grandfather is the famed marine Vice-Admiral Monkey D. Garp, who raised both Luffy and Ace. Luffy is intimidated by his grandfather, due to Garp's unorthodox training methods during Luffy's childhood. Even though Garp, being a Marine, is opposed to Luffy being a pirate and frequently beats him, they maintain good relations, as Garp refused to arrest Luffy. Other family members, including Luffy's mother, are unknown.

Luffy never kills any of the villains, no matter how cold-hearted they are; instead, he frequently sends the villain flying, knocking them out or until the point that they are almost near death, which results in some of the villains searching for revenge, such as Buggy the Clown. Oda explains that it's not a question of morality so much as a matter of punishing the villains for their crimes - he feels that killing the villains lets them off too lightly, whereas he considers letting them live to see their dreams be ruined a far more fitting punishment.

History

Luffy was raised by his grandfather and along with his brother, Portgas D. Ace. Luffy had apparently never even heard of his father. When Garp was gone, Makino and the mayor watched them.

Luffy and Shanks

When Luffy was young he met a band of pirates led by a kindly pirate named Red-Haired Shanks. Luffy befriended that band of pirates and from that moment on wanted to become a pirate as well. Luffy cut himself under his eye to show that he was tough enough to join Shanks's crew, a scene that was never reproduced in the anime. He swore over the hat of the captain of his pirate friends, Shanks, that he would be the pirate king.[4]

During his time spent with Shanks, Luffy ate a Devil Fruit (Cursèd Fruit in the English dub) known as the Gomu Gomu no Mi (ゴムゴムの実, Gum Gum Fruit, Rubber Rubber Fruit), and unwittingly turned himself into a rubber man capable of stretching, inflating, or bouncing back impact based attacks. Because Luffy didn't know the nature of the fruit, they remained friends, but after that Luffy seemed to be even more defensive of Shanks's seemingly meek band of pirates.

After Luffy stood up to Higuma the Bear, a local mountain bandit that insulted Shanks and his crew, Luffy got caught up in a hostage situation and was later rescued by Shanks. However the incident cost Shanks his left arm. Shortly after, Shanks set sail along with his crew, but before leaving, he and Luffy promised each other that one day Luffy would surpass Shanks and become the Pirate King and then Shanks left Luffy his straw hat as a parting gift, saying:

Monkey D. Luffy
"Then I'll give you my precious hat, in hope that someday you will return it to me as a great pirate!"

Monkey D. Luffy

Straw Hat Luffy

Luffy has since worked diligently on keeping that promise and is known famously as "Monkey D Luffy", or simply "Straw Hat Luffy". Luffy now aims not only to be a grand pirate, but to become Pirate King. Most people don't take his goal seriously, until they see his absurd strength. While the exact detail of his training is unknown, it is known that his grandfather had trained him for an unknown amount of time, by throwing him into deep valleys, left alone in dangerous forests in middle of the night, and tied to balloons over high altitudes, all for the sake of making Luffy stronger. He and Ace are then placed under care of a friend of his grampa for more training, but details are unknown as of now.

Even the Marines started to take him more seriously after he defeated the villainous Marine Captain "Axe-Hand" Morgan and several known pirates such as Captain Buggy the Clown, "Pirate Admiral" Don Krieg, and Arlong The Fishman (Captain Kuro is left out from this because their confrontation was never publicized, and the marines believed Kuro to have been killed by Morgan 3 years ago). A 30 million beli reward was placed on his head after he had beaten Arlong. This reward eventually becomes 100 million belly after he defeated Sir Crocodile when the World Government deemed him a serious threat for beating one of their Seven Warlords of the Sea.

During his voyage, Luffy has had a few meetings with the Marines, from the not-too serious looking return of Ironfist Fullbody (whom Luffy met first by the Baratie) to Captain Smoker (Captain Chaser in the English dub) of Loguetown (Roguetown in the english dub), to Admiral Aokiji.

Luffy has passed several islands on his way to and along The Grand Line, including Drum Island, Little Garden, Alabasta, and Skypiea. He has met many new allies, as well as making several enemies, such as Wapol, Sir Crocodile, Eneru and most recently, CP9 and the World Government.

Abilities

Luffy is the captain and the strongest member of the crew as shown in his powers and abilities, his extremely high bounty and all of the powerful enemies he has defeated, such as Crocodile, Eneru and Rob Lucci. He possesses tremendous inhuman physical strength and endurance. He has made unbelievable feats of pure strength, such as defeating Sir Crocodile by punching him through a thick ceiling of pure bedrock and by doing so caused a huge earthquake with his bare fists. He also was able to punch through a reinforced steel wall while trying to get to Robin by entering Gear 3. He also defeated Rob Lucci, who was the strongest member of the CP9 ever as well as the CP9 itself and was marked a serious threat by the World Government with a huge new bounty of 300,000,000 Belly, this gives him a bounty on par with the Shichibukai and this means that his strength is now on par with them. Superhuman strength also seems to be common with his family, as shown by his grandfather, though this also could have been honed through the hellish training he was also subjected to, and possessing the initial of D.

Luffy has gained stretching powers from eating the Gomu Gomu no Mi, which is one of the rare and legendary Devil Fruits. After consuming the Gomu Gomu no Mi, Luffy's body becomes like rubber, giving him the ability to stretch long distances. Every single part of his body can stretch. [5] Having trained hard for ten years, Luffy is able to supplement his stretching powers with immense strength, agility, and creativity in combat. His strength is not an effect of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, as he does not display unusual strength in his battle with Higuma the Bear and the fruit only gives him the ability to stretch and does not mention anything about giving him super-strength.

Luffy uses his stretching power in ingenious ways. He is able to use the malleable stretchiness of his limbs to gain tremendous velocity and hit enemies with devastating impact. His rubber body is also virtually immune to blunt objects such as bullets (in One Piece, bullets are still round pellets), punches and electricity (which gave him an advantage while fighting Eneru) reflecting off his body harmlessly (it's even become a running gag that people find out the hard way Luffy is made of rubber when they shoot at him, only to have the bullets bounce right back). However, he is still very susceptible to sharp objects such as swords and knives. He can not only use his ability to increase the range and strength of his attacks, but he can also use it to restrain and even control foes like puppets.

Like all Devil Fruit users, Luffy cannot swim (although he could not swim even before he ate the Devil Fruit). Even though the impact of blunt objects are greatly cushioned by his rubber physiology, sharp blades or points can harm him like he were a normal person. On a lighter note, Luffy can also be injured if he is hit by a fist of love or emotion, as demonstrated by his grandfather (although it could be that his grandfather is so strong that it could actually hurt him).

Some of his more common attacks are the Gomu Gomu no Pistol/Gum Gum Blast (a stretching punch) and Gomu Gomu no Bazooka/Gum Gum Double Barrel (Luffy sends his arms back a long distance and snaps them back for a powerful hit).

While he seems dimwitted, he is quite ingenious when it comes to combat; he isn't the best tactician, as he prefers straightforward attacks, but has shown to be capable of adapting into different combat situations. For example, he figured out how to counter Eneru's Mantra, and learned Soru, one of the Rokushiki techniques, by seeing it in action. He is constantly developing new attacks to keep up with his foes, the most dramatic development being Gears 2 and 3.

Also, due to the fact that he hates missing his meal while he falls asleep, especially after a battle, he had developed an ability to eat while sleeping. This trait also seems to be common with Luffy's family, as seen with his brother and his grandfather.

One Piece

One Piece (ワンピース, Wanpīsu?) is a manga and anime series created by artist Eiichiro Oda. One Piece focuses on a ragtag crew of pirates led by Captain Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy's greatest ambition is to obtain the world's ultimate treasure, One Piece, and become Pirate King.

The manga began its serial run in 1997 issue #34 of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, while the anime adaptation produced by Toei Animation premiered in 1999. Eiichiro Oda originally planned One Piece to last five years[1], and he had already planned out the ending; however, the story has continued far beyond his expectations, and its popularity has swelled to enormous proportions.

One Piece is the fourth highest selling manga in the history of Weekly Shonen Jump, and is currently Japan's most popular and all-time third-best-selling Shōnen Jump title. In TV Asahi's latest top 100 Anime Ranking, One Piece managed to come 32nd on the list beating other current and popular anime like Naruto. Volume 24 of the One Piece manga was the highest selling Japanese novel of all time, prior to the publication of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. As of 4 December 2006, the first 430 weekly chapter installments have been collected into 44 tankōbon volumes, and the manga has reached 436 chapters so far in its weekly serial run.
